As part of our Global Internship Preparation Course at the Tippie College of Business, we have been asked to define our goals for our upcoming internships in Dublin, Ireland. This process has really helped me define what I want to get out of this experience, and will allow me to measure how well I accomplished these goals when I return back to the United States. It was necessary to make each statement a SMART goal, as you will see outlined below.
Currently, I am not that deep in the placement process. I have submitted my first IES journal entry, CV, and cover letter. I have been reviewing what it takes to do well during an interview by reading the information that the Dublin program coordinators have provide and I’m ready to get started with mock interviews.
Last week, as part of our global internship preparation course, our class participated in a cross cultural simulation called BaFa’ BaFa’. This simulation is often used in workplaces to give participants a better understanding of how culture affects everyone’s life.
In the next few weeks, I will begin the placement process for the IES Study Abroad program as I find a marketing internship in Dublin, Ireland over the next summer. I know that the interviewing process can be very nerve-wracking for just about everyone, but having to do those with employers oversees just opens up another set of possible issues. So, as I go through this placement process, I am bound to learn a lot about what it takes to find a job overseas, and what I am capable of pushing myself to do.
I’ve made a big decision within the last few months—one that will greatly change my academic and professional career. I have decided to take an eight-week marketing internship in Dublin, Ireland this upcoming summer. Yep, that’s right! I just couldn’t get enough of Ireland in the one week I spent there this past winter.
As the final days before my big trip to Ireland and London come to a halt, I start to feel the panic coming on. I am so excited and nervous at the same time—I can barely contain my emotions while talking about it. I’m so excited; I got work up at 1:00am this morning to finish this blog. I’ve been counting down the days and probably annoying a lot of people while doing so.
I decided that in order to calm my nerves, I should write about why I chose to do this study abroad experience in the first place, and how I’m preparing for it. I hope it may help any students thinking about studying abroad in the future.
After many years of telling myself that it was something I should do, I have decided that it's time for me to begin blogging. I believe I have some interesting insight to provide regarding personal branding as an almost-college graduate who has had the advantage of being on the other side interviews (the employer). Truth be told: I'm mostly excited to journal my adventures while studying abroad this winter!
